AI Literacy for Children: New Skills for a Changing World

I collaborated with the UNICRI Centre for AI and Robotics on the development of the AI Literacy Guide for Parents, produced as part of the project AI Literacy for Children: New Skills for a Changing World, supported by The Walt Disney Company.

As generative AI tools increasingly enter young people’s everyday lives, many adolescents experiment with these systems before fully understanding their implications, while parents often feel unequipped to guide them. This guide was designed to address that gap.

The factsheet offers practical, evidence-informed guidance to help families:

  • talk about AI with children in age-appropriate ways

  • set healthy boundaries without shutting down exploration

  • understand both the risks and the potential of generative AI

  • access further resources for learning and support

The guide is part of a broader UNICRI initiative that also includes educational materials for adolescents, expert interviews, workshops, and research on parents’ perspectives. Together, these efforts aim to support more informed, responsible, and developmentally grounded use of AI by children and their caregivers.
